Bee Gees Diary (Aug.-Sept. 1973) “Life In A Tin Can” Tour

September is a memorable month for Bee Gees fans in Japan.
In September 2005, Robin Gibb visited Tokyo as part of what he liked to call “Bee Gee On His Own” Asian Tour, officially known as the Magnet Tour, and gave what was to be his last performance in Tokyo at International Forum in Yurakucho located in downtown Tokyo.
Also, 39 years ago today (September 15th), the Bee Gees finished off the Japanese portion of their “Life In A Tin Can” Tour with an afternoon show in Tokyo before flying away in the evening to their next destination Hong Kong.
According to the press release of Polydor Japan then in charge of the Bee Gees in Japan, they were greeted or “mobbed” by a crowd of enthusiastic fans when they arrived in Tokyo in the evening of August 30. The TV broadcast of their Budokan concert from 1972 seems to have fueled their popularity especially among teenage girls.
The “Best of Bee Gees Vol. II” album (the first 20,000 copies came with an exclusive poster of the Bee Gees from “Midnight Special”) and the “Wouldn’t I Be Someone” single were released to commemorate this second Japanese tour. The opening act for this tour was Jimmy Stevens, and his single “Paid My Dues” was released in Japan from Warner Pioneer on September 10, 1073. (In 1972 and 1974, Japanese acts opened for them.)
The Bee Gees in Japan Day-to-Day in 1973:
August 30: At 19:39 the Bee Gees and their team including their father Hugh Gibb arrived on flight BOAC850 from London. The flight was delayed for hours because, as Robin Gibb revealed upon arrival, there was a bomb threat at Heathrow.
August 31: Press Conference at Silver Hall, Tokyo Hilton Hotel. (Details about the press conference will follow later.)
September 1: Concert in Tokyo (Shinjuku Kosei Nenkin Hall). They went down to the hall to do a sound check in the afternoon. See set list for the 1973 concerts here.
September 2: Concert in Tokyo (corporate show at Shinjuku Kokaido Hall).
September 5: Concert in Fukuoka (Kyuden Gym)
September 6: Concert in Okayama (Kurashiki City Hall)
September 7: Concert in Aichi (Nagoya City Hall)
September 8: Concert in Tokyo (Shibuya Auditorium)
September 10: Travelled to Osaka on the Bullet Train. Concert at Osaka Festival Hall (Osaka).
September 11: Visit to downtown Osaka in the afternoon for an autograph/photo session for fans at Shisaibashi Store of Yamaha Records. See photos here. Concert at Osaka Festival Hall (Osaka).
September 12: Concert in Kyoto (Kyoto Kaikan Hall).
September 13: Concert in Shizuoka (Sunpu Kaikan Hall).
September 14: Concert in Tokyo (Shinjuku Kosei Nenkin Hall).
September 15: Afternoon concert in Tokyo (Shinjuku Kosei Nenkin Hall) . Flew away in the evening to their next destination Hong Kong.
In this busy schedule, they managed to take some time off in Tokyo to go bowling. We’ve heard through the grapevine that Maurice surprised the record company staff in attendance because his score was so very….. low!
